Luzon, Visayas grids on yellow alert on Thursday —NGCP


The Luzon and Visayas grids will be placed on yellow alert on Thursday, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

In an advisory, the NGCP said Luzon grid will be on yellow alert from 1 to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The available capacity in Luzon is 14,568 megawatts (MW) while the expected peak demand is 13,941 MW.

According to the NGCP, four plants have been on forced outage since 2023, three between January and March 2024, and 12 since April 2024. One other is running on derated capacity.

"[These make up] for a total of 1,424.3MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.

On the other hand, the Visayas grid will be placed on yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The region has an available Capacity of 2,829 MW as against an expected peak demand of 2,555 MW.

"[One] plant has been on forced outage since 2022, 2 since 2023, 2 between January and March 2024, and 19 since April 2024; while 12 others are running on derated capacities, for a total of 670.8MW unavailable to the grid," the NGCP said.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
