Ex-senator Rene Saguisag passes away

Former senator and prominent human rights advocate Rene Saguisag has passed away, his family announced on Wednesday.

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Papa and Lolo," the family said in a statement posted on Facebook by Saguisag's son, lawyer Rebo Saguisag.

The family is asking for privacy for the meantime.

"We will soon announce details of the service honoring his life, and we look forward to the opportunity to gather and pay tribute to a life lived with integrity and purpose," they said.

"Papa/Lolo has passed on, but his spirit will continue to inspire us to strive for a more just world," they added.

According to the Senate of the Philippines, Saguisag was elected senator in 1987 up to 1992.

He served as chairman of Senate Committee on Ethics and Privilege and Ad Coc Committee on the Bataan Nuclear power plant.

From 1972 to 1986, Saguisag practiced law and worked as a human rights lawyer.

In January 22, 1986, Saguisag became the spokesperson of then-candidate and later on president-elect Cory Aquino, according to the Senate.

“Rene Saguisag was a dedicated public servant, and his tireless endeavors as a human rights advocate, senator, and writer stand as a testament to his unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and democracy,” his family said.  —KBK, GMA Integrated News
