VP Sara eyes pilot run of new SHS curriculum in SY 2025-2026

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Tuesday said the revised curriculum for senior high school may be piloted next year.

“Ang target pilot natin for [we are targeting to pilot the] senior high school curriculum is next school year. So that’s School Year 2025 to 2026,” Duterte said in an ambush interview in Manila.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is currently in the process of reviewing the curriculum for Grades 11 and 12 in a bid to produce more job-ready and responsible graduates.

DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa previously said that the agency targets to finish the review of the Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) curriculum in May 2024.

In August 2023, DepEd launched the revised K-10 curriculum of the K-12 program, which is now being piloted in 35 schools nationwide.

Under the revised K-10 curriculum, the number of learning competencies was reduced by 70% from around 11,700 to 3,600.

DepEd also cut down the number of subjects, with greater emphasis given on the development of Kinder to Grade 3 learners' foundational skills—such as literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills.

The K-10 curriculum will be taught next to Grades 2, 5, and 8 learners in SY 2025-2026; Grades 3, 6 and 9 in SY 2026-2027; and Grade 10 in SY 2027-2028.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
