LTO, PCG to cooperate on anti-colorum, vehicle registration policies
The Land Transportation Office (LTO), on Tuesday, said that they would coordinate with the Philippine Coast Guard to combat colorum vehicle operations and implement a stronger “No Registration, No Travel” policy nationwide.
In a statement, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Attorney Vigor Mendoza II said multiple transport groups were concerned about colorum vehicles that travel along their routes.
These colorum vehicles deprived legitimate drivers and operators of over 30% of their daily income.
To correct this, Mendoza said the LTO would implement an anti-colorum drive along with a stronger “No Registration, No Travel” policy.
“We understand these concerns, and this is the reason why we have been strengthening our coordination and interoperability with the Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies against these colorum vehicles,” said Mendoza.
According to data from the LTO, more than 24 million delinquent vehicles, most of which are motorcycles, have expired registrations and make up 65% of the vehicles in the Philippines.
However, from January 1 to 23, 182,458 motor vehicles were registered and 1,966 motor vehicles were impounded.
“Malaki pa ang hahabulin namin sa LTO but with the hard work, strategic planning and implementation and the dedication for road safety of all our personnel, I am confident that we will finally reach our target,” said Mendoza.
“Hanga’t maari ay ayaw nating manghuli dahil ito ay nangangahulugan ng mas matinding abala sa mga motorista, kasama na diyan ang mataas na penalty, but we will have no other option but to conduct enforcement if this is the way to compel all the remaining delinquent motor vehicles to comply with the obligation that comes with vehicle ownership,” he added. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
