Random checks of jeepneys to take place on February 1, LTFRB says

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) chairman Teofilo Guadiz said Monday that there would be random checks of jeepneys on February 1, 2024.

To recall, those jeepney operators who fail to apply for consolidation would no longer be allowed to operate starting February.

Guadiz said the LTFRB would have a partnership with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) when it comes to the random checks.

''Initially po, we will have a partnership with the LTO and the MMDA. We will have a random check ng mga jeepney,'' Guadiz said at a Palace press briefing.

''Titingnan po namin 'yung kanilang papeles. Pangalawa po, eventually we will be issuing stickers, parang 'yung nakikita po ninyo na pinapaskil ng LTO para ma-determine po namin kung ang isang jeep ay miyembro ng isang consolidated entity,'' he added.

(We will check their documents. We will be issuing stickers just like what is being placed by the LTO so we can determine if a jeepney is a member of a consolidated entity.)

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. earlier declared that there would be no extension of the December 31, 2023 deadline.

Those who failed to apply for consolidation would no longer be allowed to operate starting Monday, January 1, 2024, especially in routes where 60% of PUVs had applications.

But those who operate in routes with less than 60% consolidation or with zero consolidation would still be allowed to ply their routes until January 31.

Authorities said that half of the jeepneys in Metro Manila could be considered ‘colorum’ starting February 1, 2024. —KG, GMA Integrated News
