CHED: Teachers won't be displaced due to SHS halt in SUCs, LUCs
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Thursday assured that teachers would neither be displaced nor transferred to other learning institutions following the discontinuation of the senior high school (SHS) program in state and local universities and colleges.
In a message to GMA News Online, CHED Chairman J. Prospero de Vera III said teachers in senior high schools are faculty members of state universities and colleges (SUCs) and local universities and colleges (LUCs), and will remain there even after the discontinuation.
"There is no transfer to DepEd or displacement. They will teach regular classes in the SUC," he said.
CHED earlier reminded SUCs and LUCs to halt the implementation of the SHS program after the K-12 transition period has ended.
The higher education institutions' engagement in basic education through SHS was only allowed within the transition time frame from School Year (SY) 2016-2017 to SY 2020-2021.
The Department of Education (DepEd), for its part, said that affected SHS learners have two options: enroll in public schools offering basic education, or enroll in private schools and avail of the voucher program.
This developed as DepEd issued a notice insisting that there should be no more Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education (GATSPE) beneficiaries from the SUCs and LUCs starting SY 2023-2024, except those who will be entering Grade 12.
DepEd on Thursday also said that there are enough public schools and teachers to accommodate all 17,700 incoming Grade 12 learners affected by the discontinuation of the SHS program in SUCs and LUCs. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
