Phivolcs: No tsunami threat to PH from Vanuatu quake


The state seismology bureau on Thursday reported that the magnitude-7.3 earthquake that struck Vanuatu did not pose a tsunami threat to the Philippines.

In a bulletin issued on Thursday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that, "there is no destructive tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake."

Hazardous tsunami waves are still possible for coasts located within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, Phivolcs said. Vanuatu is located more than 5,800 kms southeast of the Philippines.

The magnitude-7.3 quake jolted Vanuatu at 8:57 p.m. Thursday. It had a depth of 35 kms, according to the Phivolcs bulletin. - Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VDV - GMA Integrated News
