LTO to intensify 'no registration, no travel' policy; 24.7M vehicles still unregistered
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Wednesday said it will enforce a stricter “no registration, no travel” policy, amid data showing that 24.7 million vehicles remain unregistered.
Interviewed on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita, LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said they will set up more checkpoints to call out unregistered vehicles.
“Sa ngayon kasi may kaunti problema po tayo, nagka-catch up pa tayo sa plaka. But eventually, sa plaka malalaman na po natin kung hindi po naka-rehistro nang tama,” Mendoza said.
(Right now, we have a little problem catching up on the backlogs of plates. But eventually, we will determine if the vehicle is registered by checking the plate.)
“Sa motorsiklo naman, mas mahirap kasi ang laki ng hinahabol natin sa plaka sa motorsiklo. So ang ginagawa po talaga natin diyan is puro checkpoint po tayo para ma-check iyong motorsiklo natin,” he added.
(It would be harder for motorcycles because we have bigger backlogs in plates. So what we are doing is mostly establishing checkpoints to check the motorcycles.)
Mendoza said the LTO has a backlog of producing 13 million plates for motorcycles and 2.1 million driver’s licenses.
The first offense over an unregistered vehicle will serve as a warning, Mendoza said. For the second offense, the LTO chief warned that the vehicle could be impounded with a fine of P10,000.
Mendoza said the LTO is coordinating with local government units and other government agencies for the registration of vehicles.
He said the LTO is also planning to make vehicle registration available online. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
