AFP, NSA deny destabilization plot as AFP chief was misquoted
The Armed Forces of the Philippines and National Security Adviser Eduardo Año both denied there were destabilization plots against the current administration, adding that AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr.'s speech last Friday had been misquoted.
In a Saturday statement, AFP Spokesperson Colonel Medel Aguilar denied the existence of destabilization plots and said that the speech was intended to be a reminder to maintain professionalism among AFP Personnel.
“[Brawner] merely mentioned the reported efforts by certain individuals to upset the peace and stability that the country is enjoying right now under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.,” Aguilar said.
Año likewise said that the AFP chief was misinterpreted and that there were no existing destabilization movements against the government.
“There were healthy and passionate exchanges [and] debates among some retired former military officers, and even criticisms against a few policies of the current administration, but they are within the bounds of our democratic space,” Año said in his statement.
He added that most discussions were merely part of individuals' freedom of speech and were usually conducted in academic or political spaces.
“The security sector shall remain vigilant and ready to take immediate actions against any sinister group that will undermine our national security,” he said. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
