How many posts up for grabs and other numbers in BSKE 2023

The Philippines is holding the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on October 30, 2023, Monday. 

This is happening more than five years since the last polls on May 14, 2018.

The upcoming elections will be the first nationwide elections under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Here are some important numbers to remember about the elections of officials for the smallest, yet vital unit of Philippine government.

10: The number of days in the campaign period for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan candidates from October 19 to October 28, guided by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) rules. 

P5: Amount a candidate may spend per voter during the campaign

42,001: Number of barangays in the Philippines, the same number of posts for chairpersons of barangay and SK up for grabs.

2,518: Barangays that have been considered as areas of concern due to peace and order issues

294,007: Number of posts for both the Sangguniang Barangay and SK members to be filled

828,644: Total number of candidates for barangay chairpersons and kagawad

585,843: Total number of candidates for SK chairpersons and members

1982: The year when the first barangay elections were held as mandated by Batas Pambansa 222 or the Barangay Election Act.  The polls were held again in 1989, 1994, 1997, 2002, 2007, 2010

1992:  The year when the first SK elections were held.  The barangay and SK elections were synchronized in 2002.

7: The number of times the barangay elections were postponed. These were in May 1988, November 1988, 2005, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022.

8: The number of times the SK elections were postponed. These were in 2005, 2013, February 2015, April 2015, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2022.

90,209: The number of registered voters in Barangay 176 in Caloocan City, the community with the highest number.

53:  The number of registered voters in Barangay Dibarusan in Madamba, Lanao Del Sur, the community with the least number.

261,729: The population of Barangay 176, the most populous barangay

8: The number barangays without candidates for chairpersons

7,226: The number of posts for barangay chairpersons that are unopposed

8,057: The number of SK chairperson posts that are unopposed

124: Number of barangays without candidates for SK chairpersons

P33,843: Maximum monthly honoraria of barangay chairperson in special cities or first class cities.

P21,998: Maximum monthly honoraria of barangay chairperson in 6th class municipalities.
