AI to create ‘paradigm shift’ in education, VP Sara tells Seoul summit

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte on Thursday said the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) will result in a paradigm shift in education, paving the way for both opportunities and uncertainties.

In her keynote speech during the 2023 Global Education and Innovation Summit (GEIS), Duterte stressed that education must now already exist side by side with technology, which continues to grow at a fast pace.

“We now live in an era where undeniably, technology must be harnessed to improve access, quality and equality in education. And the advent of artificial intelligence will certainly create another paradigm shift in education,” she said.

“While this possibility will present newer and greater opportunities, it will also present many uncertainties in our vision of digital education,” Duterte added.

Duterte disclosed that when she was running through her speech for GEIS, she wondered why AI was not being used for its editing.

With the rise of digital education, Duterte pointed out the need to teach children how to differentiate truthful information from not, to know what contributes to a learner’s development and what does not, and what will instill in them the correct values that will turn them into productive citizens of their own countries.

Critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity must then be focused on at the age of digital education where the learning environment departs from traditional classrooms, Duterte said.

Earlier on Thursday, Duterte met with Republic of Korea Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Ju-ho Lee in Seoul, South Korea to discuss education-related matters.
