1 reported dead in Western Visayas due to Goring, Hanna —NDRRMC


One person was reported killed in Western Visayas during the onslaught of Tropical Cyclones Goring and Hanna, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Friday.

In its latest report, the NDRRMC said the information on the fatality is still for validation.

Meanwhile, a state of calamity has been declared in Pototan, Iloilo on Thursday amid the impact of the tropical cyclones, according to the NDRRMC.

A total of 387,242 people or 106,677 families were affected by Goring and Hanna in Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

Of the affected population, 21,701 persons or 5,152 families were staying in 293 evacuation centers while 24,827 individuals or 6,092 families were taking shelter in other places.

A total of 482 houses were damaged — 371 partially and 111 totally — in Ilocos, Cagayan, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and CAR.

Damage to agriculture worth P395,246,593 and to infrastructure worth P41,216,200 were also reported, according to the NDRRMC.

Power supply interruptions were being experienced in six areas in Calabarzon and Western Visayas. Water supply problems were also encountered in two areas in the same regions.

Because 71 seaports were still not operating, the NDRRMC said 234 passengers, five motorbancas, and a vessel were stranded in Calabarzon and Western Visayas.

A total of 240 classes and 94 work schedules were suspended because of the cyclones.

Assistance worth P16,498,997 has been provided to the victims, the NDRRMC said.

Meanwhile, heavy rains were experienced in some areas in Quezon City on Friday morning, according to a report of James Agustin on Unang Balita. Vehicles slowed down on some roads due to zero visibility.

 

In Barangay Bagong Silangan, the flood reached beyond the height of a person. Residents used boats to move around the area.

 

Around 200 persons or 60 families stayed in evacuation centers.

When the flood subsided, thick muds covered the affected houses.

In Abra, some roads were submerged in Barangay Sta. Rosa in Bangued. A portion of bridge in La Paz was damaged after the river swelled.

In Ilocos Norte, a dike was damaged and a waiting shed collapsed in Barangay Gabu Norte in Laoag City due to the overflowing river.

Hectares of rice fields in Paoay and crops in Bacarra were affected by flooding. A school in Solsona was also submerged in flood.

In Batangas, a Zambales-bound vessel with 10 people onboard ran aground in Barangay Ilijan.

The reported damage due to flooding cost P7 million, the Batangas Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said.

A state of calamity was also declared in Bacolod City due to the impact of heavy rains.

In Cagayan, a portion of a bridge in Solana was washed out by the strong current of the river. Authorities covered the damaged area with soil so motorists could pass, according to a report of Russel Simorio of GMA Regional TV One North Luzon.

 

Landslides were also reported Peñablanca, Rizal, Gattaran, and Pamplona.

Hectares of rice fields were submerged in flood in Camalaniugan. Some of them were about to be harvested this month.

On Friday morning, state weather bureau PAGASA said Severe Tropical Storm Hanna maintained its strength over the Philippine Sea and will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon or Habagat.
