BuCor: Cataroja escaped from Bilibid via a garbage truck

Michael Cataroja, the person deprived of liberty (PDL) who was recently re-arrested after he escaped from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in July, has demonstrated to authorities how he was able to get out from the Maximum Security Compound via a garbage truck.

Based on the videos released by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Sunday, Cataroja was seen reenacting how he clung under a garbage truck to escape the state penitentiary in Muntinlupa City.

He showed this to the members of the board of inquiry created by BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr.

Authorities said Cataroja evaded authorities on July 7. On Thursday, August 17, BuCor announced that he was re-arrested by Angono police in Sitio Minahan Bato, Barangay San Isidro after a tip from a concerned citizen.

NBP Superintendent Angie Bautista said Cataroja had been detained at the NBP for violation of the Anti-Fencing Law.

Catapang said Friday the 25-year-old PDL might have escaped by pretending to be a visitor.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, at one time, also said that Cataroja’s remains had been found decapitated at the NBP, but later said it was “fake news.”

The Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights will conduct on Tuesday, August 22, an inquiry into Cataroja's escape—KG, GMA Integrated News
