Marcos lifts state of nat’l emergency due to lawless violence in Mindanao
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has lifted the state of national emergency on account of lawless violence in Mindanao.
Marcos issued Proclamation No. 298 on July 25, explaining that the conditions then prevailing that caused the imposition of the state of emergency "have been significantly mitigated or reduced."
Its lifting will also boost economic activity and hasten the recovery of the local economy, the president added.
''Through successful, focused military and law enforcement operations and programs that promote sustainable and inclusive peace, the government has made significant gains in improving and restoring peace and order in the region,'' Marcos said.
In September 2016, former President Rodrigo Duterte issued Proclamation No. 55, which declared a state of national emergency in view of the lawless violence perpetrated by private armies and local warlords, bandits, criminal syndicates, terrorist groups, and religious extremists across the island group.
Duterte issued the proclamation following a deadly bomb attack in his hometown, Davao City, just months into his presidency. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
