Caloocan bishop David reelected CBCP head
Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of the Diocese of Caloocan was reelected president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) during its 126th Plenary Assembly in Kalibo, Aklan, on Saturday.
Around 80 bishops who are members of the plenary assembly, which serves as the highest decision-making body of the CBCP, voted to reelect David, who will remain in the post until the end of his term in two years.
In previous statements, David appealed for "more serious action" on the climate crisis and urged Catholics to "stand for truth'' amid what he called a ''pandemic of lies,'' especially on social media.
Meanwhile, Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara of the Diocese of Pasig was also reelected vice president.
The pair were first elected to their respective positions amid the COVID-19 pandemic in July 2021. The election was done online, a first in CBCP's history.
The CBCP currently consists of 87 active bishops, three diocesan administrators, and 43 honorary members who are retired bishops. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/VBL, GMA Integrated News
