President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. highlighted on Wednesday the need for mechanization to help farmers increase yields.

Marcos, who also sits as the country's agriculture chief, graced the launching of the South Cotabato Consolidated Rice Production and Mechanization Program in Banga town.

"Sa paggamit ng malalaking makinarya ay makikita natin bababa ang production cost dahil bababa ang labor cost. Tataas ang ani, tataas ang yield ninyo per hectare," Marcos said in his speech.

(By using big machines, we can expect that the production cost will decrease because the labor cost will also go down. The yield per hectare will increase.)

"Tataas ang ani, maganda na 'yung yields sa production side. Mula diyan, hindi na pwede na nagddryer tayo... 'yung ginagamit nating dryer 'yung highway... hindi na pupuwede 'yan. Kailangan dalhin natin sa magandang dryer," he added.

(The yields will increase. We should no longer use highways as "dryers" for our crops. We need to bring them to a good dryer.)

Malacañang said the program "promotes the creation of an organized and efficient rice production and marketing system in the province."

Citing the provincial government, it said the consolidated farming program would enhance production, improve grain quality, as well as become globally competitive through strategies such as good agricultural practices, low cost production, efficient farm mechanization and value adding practices, among others.

Meanwhile, cooperation and active involvement of local rice farmers are major components of the program in order to form a compact rice area of at least 1000 hectares, which the local government plans to expand within South Cotabato.

Around P115 million has been allocated to maximize the Consolidated Rice Production and Mechanization Program.

Marcos also led the distribution of various government assistance to over 5,000 beneficiaries.

These include livelihood assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) under its Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), Balik Pilipinas, Balik Hanapbuhay Program and Government Internship Program; and cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under its Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS).  —VBL, GMA Integrated News
