Sara Duterte checks out Brunei education best practices which may be applied in PH

Vice President Sara Duterte on visited schools in Brunei to observe best practices in education which may be adopted in the Philippines.

Duterte is in Brunei as president of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization.

She went to Sekolah Rendah Pusar Ulak, a public school in Brunei, to observe the country’s best practices in its basic education.

"Nakikita natin yung pagtuturo nila ng Quran sa kanilang mga learners. Magagamit natin yon doon sa ating mga eskuwelahan na nasa BARMM," Duterte said.

(We see that they are teaching the Quran to their learners. We can use that in our schools in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.)

Duterte also pointed out that Brunei’s school facilities are “ideal” considering their size that is apt for learners.

“‘Yung facilities nila ay napakaganda dahil malaki ang facilities nila and then konti lang ‘yung class size nila which is ‘yun ‘yung ideal talaga,” she added.

(Their facilities are very nice because their facilities are big and then their class size is small, which is really ideal.)

In January, Duterte admitted that the lack of school infrastructure and facilities remained the primary problem in the country's basic education system.

She thus underscored the need to build and repair school facilities in order to accommodate the learning needs of millions of students in the country.

During her Brunei trip, Duterte is set to meet with SEAMEO Vocational and Technical Education and Training (VOCTECH) officials and examine strategies which could be used to further raise the quality of education in Southeast Asia.

She also attended an exhibition on digital and e-learning tools being used by Seri Mulia Sarjana International School.

Along with her during the trip was Naomi, a high school student from Bacolod, who was picked to be part of the “You Can Be VP” program of the Office of the Vice President.

The project aims to provide opportunities to select students to observe the role of the Vice President in action while on official engagements. —Giselle Ombay/NB, GMA Integrated News
