Cardinal Advincula to wash feet of individuals from LGBT, labor, indigenous sectors on Maundy Thursday
Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula is set to wash the feet of 12 individuals from different sectors of society on Thursday, according to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM).
“Heeding the call of His Holiness Pope Francis to become a more listening and compassionate church, Manila Archbishop Jose F. Cardinal Advincula will wash the feet of twelve persons of those coming from different sectors of society who need our attention and concern,” the RCAM said in a statement.
The RCAM said among those individuals who will participate are Dr. Ryan Capitulo from the LGBT community, broadcast journalist Raffy Tima, Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson Atty. John Rex Laudiangco, Judge Caroline Rivera-Colasito from the judiciary, Johhan Joseph Ararao from the Intramuros Administration, kalesa driver Cyril John Sunnga, jeepney driver John Michael Roldan, Angkas rider Manuel Jorge Manarang, mission station priest Ernesto Panelo, Sr. Liane Rainville, farmer Alberto Mandia, and Dumagat indigenous elder Iluminada Sta. Ana.
The washing of the feet is part of the evening mass on Maundy Thursday, April 6 at the Manila Cathedral at 5 p.m., the RCAM said.
It is part of the liturgy as it commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles.
“This significant practice of the Catholic Church is a symbolic act of humility, service, and love which is also associated with acts of charity and compassion,” the RCAM added.
