Oil spill affects Mindoro seabirds

Not only the residents but even the seabirds in Oriental Mindoro were affected by the massive oil spill from the MT Princess Empress which sank off Najuan.

According to Doc Nielsen Donato’s report on “24 Oras”, several species of birds were found dead and covered in oil in several coastal communities in the area.

“If it's not managed properly, we're looking at years. With proper management, probably, it will require three to five years but without proper containment, it can last longer than that. We're looking at decades for complete rehabilitation,” Dr. Irene Rodriguez of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute warned.

Authorities have yet to assess the impact of the oil leak on the underwater species in the affected areas as it remains unsafe for diving.

Meanwhile, residents are still hopeful they can bounce back from the spill.

“Magiging matatag na lang po sa anumang mga pagsubok na dumadating sa amin,” a resident said. (We'll remain strong and overcome any challenges we may face.) — Sundy Locus/DVM, GMA Integrated News
