SC allows Ressa to travel abroad for ‘speaking engagements'

The Supreme Court announced on Wednesday that it has allowed Rappler CEO Maria Ressa to travel abroad from March 13 to April 1, 2023.

According to the Court's First Division, Ressa will travel to Canada, France, South Korea, and the United States for some "speaking engagements."

Ressa’s overseas travel was granted subject to certain conditions.

The SC said Ressa must refrain from discussing her case in public and other related matters.

She was also directed to travel on the cash bond of P100,000 that she previously posted. 

Ressa must also notify the SC in writing of her return to the Philippines within five days of her arrival.

Last October, the Court of Appeals upheld the cyberlibel convictions of Ressa and former Rappler researcher Reynaldo Santos. Santos had said they would appeal before the SC. 

The case was in connection with the 2012 article Rappler published that linked businessman Wilfredo Keng to human trafficking and drug smuggling, citing an intelligence report. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
