House panel okays con-con as way to amend Constitution
The House constitutional amendments panel on Monday approved the unnumbered Resolution of Both Houses calling for a constitutional convention (con-con) for amending the 1987 Constitution.
This developed after the unnumbered Resolution of Both Houses garnered 16 yes votes, three no votes and one abstention.
Under the 1987 Constitution, one of the measures to amend the Charter is via con-con, a scheme whereby delegates from each district will be elected by the public to be a delegate of the con-con which would draft the new Charter.
The House constitutional amendments panel, however, has yet to identify which specifics of the Constitution will be amended. It will hold another committee hearing on Wednesday to settle the matter.
The panel agreed on the con-con to pursue Charter change after seven public hearings, including those conducted in Batasan, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Pampanga and Bulacan. —KG, GMA Integrated News
