Reported deaths due to inclement weather reach 20 —NDRRMC

The number of reported fatalities due to the effects of the low pressure areas, Northeast Monsoon (Amihan), and shear line since January 1 rose to 20, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Saturday.

Five of the deaths were in Region 5; six in Region 8; four each in Regions 9 and 10; and one in Region 11.

In its situational report, the NDRRMC said 10 of the reported deaths were already validated, while the 10 others are for validation.

Meanwhile, the number of injured stood at eight — four in Region 9 and four in Region 10 — all for validation.

One remains confirmed missing in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

A total of 343 areas were flooded due to inclement weather, the NDRRMC said.

The number of affected families reached 133,258 representing 552,131 persons.

Of this number, 15,447 families (79,413 persons) were taken to 127 evacuation centers while 5,150 families (649 persons) stayed outside evacuation centers.

Meanwhile, 1,135 houses were damaged in Mimaropa, Regions 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and BARMM.

Of this number, 865 houses were partially damaged while 270 were totally damaged.

Production loss or damage to agriculture reached P257,765,961.89 while damage to infrastructure was estimated at P171,230,996.

A total of P32,367,486.68 worth of assistance has been extended to affected residents so far in Regions 2, 3, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11.

On Saturday, an LPA located over Surigao del Sur and the Northeast Monsoon will continue to affect parts of the country, PAGASA said.

The Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte will have cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms brought about by the LPA. Flooding or landslides may possibly occur due to moderate to heavy and at times intense rains.

Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao meanwhile will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms also due to the LPA, with possible flooding or landslides due to moderate to heavy rains.

Metro Manila, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, and Bulacan will have cloudy skies with rains due to the monsoon. Moderate to at times heavy rains may possibly lead to flash floods or landslides. —KG, GMA Integrated News
