11 reported dead due to bad weather since Jan. 2 —OCD exec


Eleven people were reported dead since January 2 due to inclement weather over the past few days, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Joint Information Center head Diego Agustin Mariano said Tuesday.

Mariano told GMA News Online that as of 8 a.m., 263,906 people or 63,101 families were affected the rainy weather caused by low pressure areas in Bicol, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao, Davao, and Bangsamoro.

Of the affected population, 3,387individuals or 815 families were displaced.

Damage to infrastructure worth P125,490,260 and to agriculture worth P77,934,325 were reported due to the impact of the LPA.

Assistance worth P8,984,566 has been provided to the victims, according to Mariano.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, state weather bureau PAGASA said the LPA was located 425 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur at 10 a.m.

While it is less likely to develop as tropical depression, PAGASA said the LPA will bring moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Sorsogon, Masbate, Eastern Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao Del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan del Norte.

Light to moderate with at times heavy rains will be experienced over Agusan del Sur, regions Davao and Northern Mindanao, as well as the rest of Bicol and the Visayas, it added.

PAGASA warned of possible flooding and rain-induced landslides especially in areas that are prone to these hazards and those with significant antecedent rainfall. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
