DOH reports 3 new cases of fireworks-related injuries

The Department of Health (DOH) recorded three new cases of fireworks-related injuries from 61 sentinel hospitals since December 23, 2022, Friday.

Four cases of fireworks-related injuries were recorded from December 21-24, 2022, the same number of cases as last year.

The Health Department urged the public to avoid using fireworks to prevent injuries and to continue practicing safer celebrations of the New Year by using alternative ways to create loud noises.

Meanwhile, the DOH said on Friday that all hospitals would be on high alert for individuals with injuries and emergencies that may occur during the New Year celebrations.

On December 23, 2022, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) advised the public to only purchase fireworks and firecrackers manufactured locally that bear the Philippine Standard (PS) mark for guaranteed safety and quality.

Last month, the Philippine National Police said the use of huge firecrackers was still prohibited, but there was no ban on firecrackers and pyrotechnics imposed on manufacturers and retailers. However, sellers should display their products in designated areas.

Violators will face a fine up to P30,000 or imprisonment up to one year, or both at the court's discretion under Republic Act No. 7183. Their license and business permit will also be canceled, and their stocks will be confiscated. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
