Marcos: New security challenges do not recognize borders
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday urged the military to continue working with the Philippines' neighbors and allies to address a "complex security environment," noting that current security challenges "do not recognize borders."
"New security challenges do not recognize borders and we must continue to work with our neighbors, our allies, partners and friends to address mutual security concerns," Marcos said during the 87th anniversary celebration of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.
Aside from partnerships, Marcos said the military needs to have enough in its arsenal to effectively combat threats, adding that his constant "marching guidance" is "to commit to the cause of peace."
"The security and stability of the country remains the priority. I call on you to continue performing your duties as you have had for many many years, and competently, so that our country can achieve peace and security, as well as sustain economic prosperity," the military's commander-in-chief said in his speech.
"Rest assured to all the Armed Forces and all the uniformed services that this administration remains committed to the modernization of the Armed Forces. We will be partners towards your vision of a strong, credible, world-class armed force that is a source of national pride and a source of national security."
Marcos also praised the military's efforts in fighting communists rebels and providing assistance during natural disasters.
He also lauded soldiers for staking their lives for the benefit of the country.
"Hindi lingid sa aking kaalaman ang sakripisyo ng ating hukbo at ang panganib na kanilang hinaharap sa tawag ng tungkulin kaya naman bukod sa kagamitan, patuloy nating susuportahan ang kanilang pangangailangan," Marcos said.
