House condemns 'senseless killing' of broadcaster Percy Lapid
The House of Representatives on Monday adopted a resolution condemning in the “strongest possible terms” the killing of veteran radio broadcaster Percy Lapid and expressing grave concern over the safety of journalists in the country.
House Resolution No. 489 was adopted by the legislative body during the resumption of their session following a month-long recess.
“Local and international journalists were outraged and deeply saddened by the killing of Mr. Percival ‘Percy Lapid’ C. Mabasa, and they considered this dastardly act as an attack on the freedom of speech and of the press that must be stopped in order to save and maintain democracy,” the resolution reads.
“Now, therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives, to condemn in the strongest possible terms, the senseless killing of veteran broadcaster Percival ‘Percy Lapid’ C. Mabasa and to express grave concern for the safety and security of journalists in the country,” it added.
House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Representatives Manuel Jose Dalipe and Marcelino Libanan authored the measure that was filed on October 21, 2022.
Lapid, a hard-hitting radio commentator, was shot dead while on his way home in Barangay Talon Dos, Las Piñas City, on October 3.
Earlier, the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation filed murder complaints against suspended Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag and other personalities in relation to his death. -- BAP, GMA News
