NAIA runway closure due to gusty winds extended –DOTr
The closure of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) runways due to Severe Tropical Storm Paeng would be extended, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Saturday.
In an advisory, the DOTr said the closure of the NAIA runways has been extended until 10 p.m. on Saturday.
“The MIAA, in coordination with CAAP and PAGASA, assures the public that it is closely monitoring the weather situation and is prepared to receive flights once NAIA runways reopen,” the department said.
The department earlier announced that the NAIA runways would be closed to flight operations from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. until the prevailing conditions improved.
“Strong winds within the NAIA aerodrome made it difficult for several planes to land resulting to diversions since 3:30 p.m.,” it said in a separate statement.
“The MIAA seeks the understanding of the air riding public as safety of flights and passengers are its priority,” it added.
Paeng has maintained its strength while moving over San Pablo City, Laguna, PAGASA said on Saturday afternoon.
Heavy to intense with at times torrential rains are expected over Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Marinduque, Romblon, Mindoro Provinces, and the northern portion of Palawan, including Calamian and Cuyo Islands for the rest of Saturday. — DVM, GMA News
