Marcos vows to support PCG’s modernization efforts
?President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Wednesday vowed that his administration would support the modernization efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).
The Chief Executive was the guest of honor of the 121st founding anniversary of the Philippine Coast Guard held at the Port Area in Manila. Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, Senator Francis Tolentino, and National Security Adviser Clarita Carlos were present during the event.
“As your leader, I assure you that this administration will always be behind you, supportive of your efforts and initiatives to modernize the PCG which will redound to better delivery of service to the nation,” Marcos said in his speech.
“I urge you to continue your dedication and persistence in your duties and responsibilities and move full throttle towards the realization of your vision to be a world-class guardian of the sea committed to save lives, assure safer maritime transportation, ensure clear seas and secure maritime jurisdiction,” he added.
Marcos told PCG personnel that as they fulfill their duties, “know very well that you will never sail as a lone body in these unsettling waters.”
“The entire force of the Filipino people will fuel your voyages, aiding you in your mission, as you brave our seas and make a difference in the lives of the people that you serve,” Marcos said.
He acknowledged the PCG's crucial role in the government’s law enforcement initiatives and its part in defending the country's maritime territory.
"The Philippine Coast Guard in the recent past has taken on many new duties. Critical of that is now you are the frontline in the defense of our maritime territory, in defense of our economic zones, in defense of our baselines," said Marcos.
"Although this may not have been originally part of the mission of the Philippine Coast Guard, you have nonetheless been performing that mission with honor, with skill, with dedication. And we in the — and the rest of the government counts on you to continue that good work," he added.
He also emphasized the PCG's role as "stewards of the environment who promote environmental sustainability by ensuring that all vessels and activities in the seas are compliant with our existing regulations and laws."
Admiral Artemio Abu, for his part, mentioned the PCG’s efforts in upholding maritime law enforcement, maritime security, maritime safety, maritime search and rescue, and marine environmental protection in the previous year.
He said the PCG have expanded its presence across the country by establishing additional unit, constructing maritime safety facilities, and procuring more assets.
“We have also expanded to 15 PCG regional districts, 89 stations, and more than 400 sub-stations nationwide. We maintain more than 500 lighthouses in different regions, which help vessels navigate safely within our waters,” Abu said.
“We have commissioned two newest and biggest multi-role vessels from Japan - BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Melchora Aquino - regularly conducting maritime patrols and humanitarian missions,” he added. — RSJ, GMA News
