BRP Antonio Luna tests firepower at Hawaii naval event

The Philippine Navy's BRP Antonio Luna (FF151) has tested its main guns and batteries at the sea phase of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise 2022, the world’s largest joint and combined naval exercise, held in Hawaii.

At the Gunnery Exercise (GUNNEX), the FF151 tested the accuracy of its main battery 76MM Super Rapid Gun, 30MM Smash Aselsan, and Caliber 50 Machine Gun, as it aimed at the hammer-head targets deployed by the Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate HMCS Winnipeg, the Philippine Navy said in a news release.

The FF151's 76MM Super Rapid Gun was also tested at the Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) Rodeo exercise by targeting 2D virtual land information.

The Navy said the BRP Antonio Luna and other participants were given a practice run for gunfire corrections prior to proceeding with the record firing.

RIMPAC 2022 aims to measure and validate the Philippine Navy's capacity to sustain operations overseas, and to provide resources and an environment that allow international participants to achieve their individual and collective training objectives. —Jamil Santos/KBK, GMA News
