Philippines observes 124th National Flag Day

The Philippines on Saturday commemorated the 124th National Flag Day, marking the day the flag was first unfurled in Imus, Cavite, and culminating on June 12, Independence Day.

At Luneta Park in Manila, the Philippine Navy took the lead during the flag-raising ceremony at the monument of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

The stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Parañaque City, Pasay City up to Manila also had a display of Philippine flags, according to a report by Mao dela Cruz on Dobol B TV.

At the Dambana ng Pambansang Watawat ng Pilipinas at Imus Heritage Park in Imus, Cavite, preparations were readied earlier in time for the 8 a.m. simultaneous flag ceremony spearheaded by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the local government unit.

The Philippine flag was first unfurled on May 28, 1898 by Philippine Revolutionary Army forces in Imus after they defeated Spanish troops in the Battle of Alapan.

Proclamation No. 374 issued March 6, 1965 designated May 28 as Flag Day to commemorate this event.

Executive Order 179 issued on May 24, 1994 mandated all government departments, agencies, offices, government-owned and -controlled corporations, instrumentalities, and local government units to display the Philippine flag in all public buildings, government institutions and official residences from May 28 to June 12 every year.

It also tasked the Department of Education to have the Philippine flag displayed in all public squares and, whenever practicable, in all private buildings and homes, in coordination with the private sector, non-government organizations, and socio-civic groups.

This year's theme of the National Flag Day is "Pagtuon sa Hamon ng Panibagong Bukas." —KG, GMA News
