Millennial voters outnumber other generations in Eleksyon 2022
The youth vote can make the difference in the 2022 national elections as younger voters outnumber their elders among the registered voters this year.
In the second installment of the "Dapat Totoo: Eleksyon 2022 Special Reports," Ivan Mayrina showed the breakdown of voters by generation based on data from GMA News Research.
Millennials (age 26-41) and Gen Z (age 18-25) combined account for over 56% of registered voters. The former has the highest percentage with 23.9 million (36.4%), while the latter accounts for 13 million (20%).
"If the youth can get it's act together, it can become a very significant voting bloc. The youth are aware of how important it is to select the leaders of our coming government," said Commission on Elections spokesperson James Jimenez.
Meanwhile, Generation X (age 42-57) also has a sizeable share among registered voters with 16.7 million (25.5%). The Baby Boomer, Silent Generation, and Greatest Generation have the lowest share with 11.9 million (18%).
According to COMELEC data, 65.7 million voters registered for the 2022 elections. This is higher than the number of registered voters in 2019, which totaled around 61.8 million.
Most of the increase was driven by first-time voters, which numbered around seven million.
Overall, 21.6 million or 33% of the total registered voters this year are considered youth, or those who belong to ages 18 to 30.
Dr. Louie Benedict Ignacio, a sociologist, believes that the youth today are more aware of what is going on around them and are not afraid to speak their mind.
They are also ready to participate in political affairs by registering their vote.
Said Jocel Sevilla, a first-time voter: "One vote really matters. A micro act can lead to a macro effect."
