Carpio: Supposed BIR-PCGG deal on Marcos estate tax 'laughable'

Retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio has called the supposed agreement between the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Presidential Commission on Good Government as regards the Marcoses' P203.8-billion estate tax "wrong, a falsehood, and laughable."

According to Chino Gaston's report on "24 Oras", Carpio challenged the camp of presidential candidate Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to present proof of the agreement.

“That’s totally wrong, wala, there is no such thing. That’s falsehood, that’s laughable. Final na ‘yun eh," Carpio told GMA News.

"That’s the decision of the Supreme Court. Hindi ‘yan puwede. That cannot be made to depend on a decision of the Sandiganbayan,” he added,

“That’s foolishness, total foolishness to say we have to wait for the decision of the Sandiganbayan,” Carpio said.

Aksyon Demokratiko, the party of Presidential bet Mayor Isko Moreno, has dared Marcos to pay the estate tax.

Atty. Vic Rodriguez, Marcos' spokesman, said the subject pieces of property were still under litigation.

He claimed there was already an agreement between the BIR and the PCGG as regards the tax on the estate of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

Aksyon Demokratiko has sent letters to both the BIR and the PCGG as regards the claim of the Marcos camp.

The Supreme Court in 1997 denied the petition Marcos Jr. to reverse the decision of the Court of Appeals, which in 1994,  ruled that ”the deficiency assessments for estate and income tax made upon the petitioner and the estate of the deceased President Marcos have already become final and unappealable, and may thus be enforced by the summary remedy of levying upon the properties.”

If he wins the presidency, Moreno said he planned to use the P200 billion for aid while a portion of it could be used to build 17 world-class regional hospitals. —Richa Noriega/NB, GMA News
