Ukrainian envoy asks Filipinos to join calls for accountability over Russian invasion

The Ukrainian ambassador on Friday asked Filipinos to join calls to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Ambassador Olexander Nechytaylo, who is based in Kuala Lumpur, assured all foreigners in Ukraine of assistance amid the chaos caused by the conflict in the country. 

“It exposes the ugly nature of the current regime in Kremlin. Hundreds of people, including children, have been killed as a result of indiscriminate attacks on the residential homes and civilian infrastructure," Nechytaylo told GMA News.

"So, don’t be just an observer: together we must hold the perpetrator accountable,” he added.

Nechytaylo accused Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of lying.

“For many months we’d been hearing the assurances from President Putin and from Foreign Minister (Sergey) Lavrov that Russia is not going to attack Ukraine," Nechytaylo said.

"They were lying. Russia waged an unprecedented unprovoked invasion into Ukraine,” he added.

As regards help for foreigners still in Ukraine, Nechtaylo said the government would help even those with expired visas.

“All who are currently stuck in Ukraine will be provided with all the necessary assistance, subject of course, to security situation," Nechytaylo said.

"We are aware of the joint efforts by the Honorary Consulate General in Kyiv and the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw to repatriate the Philippine nationals," he added.

"Ukrainian authorities provide all necessary cooperation and support, including  cases  with expired or overstayed visas,” Nechytaylo said. —NB, GMA News
