DOJ orders NBI probe into missing 'sabungeros'

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Thursday directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to look into the reported abduction and disappearance of dozens of cockfight enthusiasts.

Guevarra issued the order to NBI officer-in-charge Eric Distor, who was also directed to submit reports on the progress of the investigation to the Office of the Secretary within 10 days.

Earlier in the day, the Senate said it might conduct next week an investigation into the missing sabungeros incident.

The Philippine National Police has recorded at least 26 missing individuals who were last seen at cockfighting arenas. 

The abduction of one missing sabungero in Laguna was caught on camera, according to Emil Sumangil’s “24 Oras” report on Wednesday. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/VBL, GMA News
