Ex-DFA chief Roberto Romulo dies at 83


Former Foreign Affairs Secretary Roberto "Bobby" Romulo died on Sunday at the age of 83, his family confirmed on Monday.

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat confirmed the passing  of her uncle, Romulo.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tito Bob. He led an exemplary and full life in both the private and public sector," Puyat said in a statement.

"Tito Bob was very supportive of my career in public service. I appreciate how always cheered me on in everything. Our family will dearly miss him," she added.

According to the Romulo Foundation, there will be an online mass hosted by Ambassador Jesus Tambunting offered for Romulo.

Based on the website, Romulo has become the chairman of several organizations including AIG Philippines Insurance, Inc., PETNET   Inc., MediLink Network Inc. and Nationwide Development Corporation (NADECOR).

He was also previously appointed as Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the Commission of the European Communities.

In 1992, he served as secretary of the Department of Foreign of Affairs.

Prior to his government stint, he also served 25 years in the IBM Corporation.

Message of condolences poured over his demise, including one coming from the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and Consulate General in Geneva, Iloilo Mayor Jerry Trenas, and Zuellig Family Foundation. —LDF, GMA News
