DOJ wants to transfer Kerwin Espinosa to more secure detention facility
The Department of Justice is looking to transfer confessed drug dealer Kerwin Espinosa to a more secure detention facility after they attempted to escape the National Bureau of Investigation jail.
On January 13, Espinosa and two others planned to escape through a hole of the exhaust fan at the ceiling at the NBI facility.
“We believe that Kerwin Espinosa should be transferred to a more secure detention facility in view of the numerous cases that he is currently facing,” Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said in a message to reporters.
Guevarra said Espinosa's transfer would need commitment orders from the courts.
He said the Department of Justice will recommend the most secure facility of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
“Ordinarily, unbailed individuals awaiting completion of their trial are detained in facilities of the BJMP,” Guevarra said.
“The courts will determine the appropriate BJMP facility, but we’ll recommend the most secure one. The same arrangement will be recommended for the other detainees who attempted to escape,” he added.
In December 2021, a Makati Regional Trial Court dismissed the case against self-confessed drug distributor Kerwin Espinosa, and others for the failure of the prosecution to cite evidence to overturn their presumption of innocence.
This is regarding the conspiracy that the Espinosa group agreed to commit illegal trading or trafficking of dangerous drugs. —NB, GMA News
