Kerwin Espinosa, 2 others tried to escape detention center —NBI
Self-confessed drug distributor Kerwin Espinosa and two other prisoners attempted to escape the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) detention center, the agency announced Monday.
NBI OIC-Director Eric Distor said the agency received information that Espinosa and two others were planning to escape through a hole of the exhaust fan at the ceiling on January 13.
That same night, NBI authorities immediately inspected the jail.
The raiding team later found a deformed exhaust fan in one of the cells which exposed a hole big enough for a detainee to escape.
"As soon as they received the info, they immediately acted on it without delay,” Distor said in a statement.
Due to this, Distor said security measures have been tightened in all jail facilities.
"In view of this incident, security measures at the jail has since been tightened with regular inspection of all jail facilities,” he said.
In December 2021, a Makati Regional Trial Court dismissed the case against self-confessed drug distributor Kerwin Espinosa, and others for the failure of the prosecution to cite evidence to overturn their presumption of innocence.
In a 13 page-decision, the Makati RTC Branch 64 granted the demurrer to evidence filed by Espinosa, Lovely Impal, Wu Tuan Yuan as well as the motion to dismiss the demurrer to evidence filed by Marcelo Adorco.
This is regarding the conspiracy that the Espinosa group agreed to commit illegal trading or trafficking of dangerous drugs.
However, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Espinosa is not yet off the hook.
“Kerwin Espinosa is not off the hook yet; I understand that he is still facing an unfinished case before RTC-Manila and another drug case in Albuera, Leyte,” Guevarra said in a message to reporters.—AOL, GMA News
