Philippines logs new record high 37,207 COVID-19 cases; active tally at 265K

The Philippines on Friday logged 37,207 new COVID-19 cases, another highest daily tally since the start of pandemic, increasing the nationwide count to 3,129,512.

The previous highest daily case count reported was 34,021 on Thursday, January 13.

Based on the Department of Health (DOH)’s latest bulletin, the new cases brought the country's active case count to 265,509, of which 8,325 are asymptomatic, 252,502 are mild, 2,913 are moderate, 1,469 are severe, and 300 are in critical condition.

The DOH said of the 37,207 reported cases on Friday, 36,577 or 98% occurred within the recent 14 days from January 1 to January 14, 2022.

The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region with 16,824 or 46%, followed by Region 4-A with 8,580 or 23% and Region 3 with 4,052 or 11%.

The number of recoveries rose to 2,811,188 after 9,027 more patients recovered from the respiratory disease.

The country’s death toll climbed to 52,815, with 81 new fatalities.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ COVID-19 positivity rate was at 47.3%, slightly lower than the 47.9% positivity rate on Thursday.

Both are higher than the World Health Organization's requirement target of less than 5% positivity rate, which means that there is a high transmission rate of the virus.

The total conducted COVID-19 tests were at 81,737.

The latest data also showed that 46% of 3,400 intensive care unit (ICU) beds for COVID-19 patients nationwide are in use.

At least 48% of the 13,400 ward beds in the country were utilized, while 67% of the 4,400 ward beds in the NCR were in use.

The DOH said all laboratories were operational since January 12, while there were eight laboratories that failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.

It reported 104 duplicates were removed from the total case count. Of these, 67 are recoveries and two deaths.

Meanwhile, at least 58 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.—LDF, GMA News
