Philippines posts record-high 33,169 new COVID-19 cases; active tally at 157K

The Philippines on Monday again registered an all-time high new COVID-19 infections with 33,169, raising the Philippines' total caseload to 2,998,530.

Of the 33,169 fresh cases, 32,972 or 99% occurred within the recent 14 days from December 28 to January 10, 2022. In the recent two weeks, Metro Manila had the highest number of new cases with 18,535 or 56%, followed by Calabarzon  with 7,443 or 23% and Central Luzon with 3,403 or 10%.

This is the third straight day that the Department of Health posted record-high fresh cases.

On Saturday, new record-high infections were reported with 26,458, the highest daily case count since September 11, 2021.

This number was surpassed on Sunday with 28,707 new infections.

Meanwhile, the country's active infections rose to 157,526. Of this number,   4,994 are asymptomatic, 147,912 are mild, 2,858 are moderate, 1,461 are severe, and 301 are critical.

The Philippines' positivity rate climbed to 46%. A total of 73,234 total COVID-19 tests were conducted.

The data also showed that the death toll increased to 52,293, with 145 more deaths.

Of the 145 deaths, three occurred in November 2021 (2%), 18 in October 2021 (12%), 52 in September 2021 (36%), 22 in August 2021 (15%), 24 in July 2021 (17%), 13 in June 2021 (9%), five in May 2021 (3%),  one each in March 2021 (1%) and February 2021 (1%), and six in January 2021 (4%).

"Deaths were from and Region 11 (145 or 100% due to late encoding of death information to COVIDKaya. This issue is currently being coordinated with the Epidemiology and Surveillance Units to ensure information is up to date," said DOH.

Total recoveries in the country reached 2,788,711, with 3,725 new ones.

Utilization rate of nationwide intensive care unit beds went up to 38% and 17% occupancy rate for mechanical ventilators across the country.

In National Capital Region, 52% of ICU beds are occupied while 25% of ventilators are in use.

The Philippines' total caseload was also revised by removing 86 duplicates, including 73 recoveries and two deaths.

Also, 124 recoveries were reclassified as fatalities after final validation.

All labs were operational on January 8, 2022 but DOH said there were 10 non-reporting labs.

In the past 14 days, the  DOH said these 10 non-reporting labs contribute, on average, 6.2% of samples tested and 6.3% of positive individuals.—LDF, GMA News
