5,434 new COVID-19 cases bring active tally to 29K
The Philippines on Tuesday posted 5,434 additional coronavirus disease infections, raising the Philippines' total tally to 2,861,119.
Of the 5,434 fresh cases, the Department of Health said 5,395 (99%) occurred within the last 14 days from December 22, 2021 to January 4, 2022. The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were Metro Manila with 3,826 or 71%, Calabarzon with 864 or 16% and Central Luzon with 333 or 6%.
This number is within the prediction of OCTA Research Group of 5,000 to 6,000 new infections nationwide.
The new infections also pushed the active tally to 29,809 from 24,992 recorded on January 3, 2022. Of the 29,809, 889 are asymptomatic, 24,026 are mild, 3,020 are moderate, 1,546 are severe, and 328 are critical.

The Philippines' positivity rate climbed to 26.2% from January 3's positivity rate of 20.7%. A total of 24,855 total tests were conducted.
This is too high compared to the World Health Organization's standard of less than 5% positivity rate. If the rate is 5% or higher, it indicates a high transmission rate of the virus.
The country's health department also said the death toll climbed to 51,604, with 18 fatalities.
Of the 18 fatalities, two happened in January 2022 (11%), eight in December 2021 (44%), two in November 2021 (11%), three in October 2021 (17%), one in August 2021 (6%), and two in July 2021 (11%).
As for recoveries, 611 more patients survived the severe respiratory disease, bringing the recovery tally to 2,779,706.
Meanwhile, the DOH recorded 26% occupancy rate for intensive care unit beds across the country and 14% utilization rate for mechanical ventilators nationwide.
In Metro Manila, 35% of ICU beds are in use while 20% of ventilators are utilized.
The DOH again modified the Philippines' total caseload by removing 13 duplicates which are recoveries, and 121 negative cases, which include 119 recoveries.
Further, 14 recoveries were reclassified as fatalities after final validation.
All labs were operational on January 2, 2022 but DOH reported 16 non-reporting labs.
The DOH data in the past 14 days showed that these labs contribute, on average, 2.1% of samples tested and 1.8% of positive individuals.—LDF, GMA News
