Philippines jumps to 57th from 103rd in Nikkei Asia’s COVID-19 recovery rankings

The Philippines made a huge jump from 103rd in October to 57th place in the latest COVID-19 recovery ranking by Tokyo-based news magazine Nikkei Asia.

In its November 30 report released on Monday, the Philippines climbed 46 spots to share the 57th place with Tajikistan, Norway, and Malaysia.

In October, the Philippines ranked 103rd among over 120 regions.

The Philippines' previous rankings were 121st in September, 106th in August, and 108th in July.

According to Nikkei, the Philippines' ranking improvement was mainly due to a "significant increase in its infection management scores."

However, Nikkei said although the country's infection numbers have dropped from the September peak, its short-term case fatality rate stands at over 9% -- the second highest in the world, according to Our World in Data.

Bahrain topped the November edition with a score of 73; followed by Kuwait with 72; the United Arab Emirates with 70.5; Malta and Taiwan with 69; China with 68.5; Chile, Japan, and Saudi Arabia with 68; and Uruguay with 66.

Laos took the 122nd spot with 22.5 points.
