PNP vows crackdown on illegal firearms, bodyguards ahead of Eleksyon 2022

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it will focus on controlling the proliferation of illegal firearms and use of unauthorized bodyguards for politicians to help ensure a peaceful and orderly elections in May 2022.

PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said he has directed concerned police directional staff, area commanders, and national support units to consolidate all resources, personnel, and support systems to observe the mandated police duties by the Commission on Elections.

“I have already laid down my guidance to the PNP commanders during the Command Conference last Monday, and I expect this guidance to be cascaded and adopted in operations planning by lower units,” Carlos said.

Comelec recently issued Resolution No. 10728 that stated the prohibition on unauthorized firearms and bodyguards ahead of the election period.

The resolution bans bearing, carrying or transporting firearms or deadly weapons outside residence or place of business and in all public places from January 9 to June 8, 2022 or for a total of 150 calendar days.

The resolution also provides that only PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Philippine Coast Guard and members of other law enforcement agencies, are exempted from the gun ban, as long as they obtain authorization from the Comelec and wear agency-prescribed uniform while performing official duty during the election period. They are also only allowed a maximum of 2 firearms per individual.

Further, the resolution also read that no one, including the candidates or any public officials, are allowed to employ or engage the services of security personnel or bodyguards unless authorized by Comelec, through the Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns.

Carlos said a gradual recall will be implemented in the coming days for police personnel on security detail to local executives and other VIPs with verified threats.

“A complete accounting of police personnel with detailed orders to provide security to some public officials and some private individuals is now underway to hasten the recall process,” Carlos added.—Giselle Ombay/LDF, GMA News
