DepEd: Enrollment increased by 3.83% for SY 2021-2022

The Department of Education (DepEd) has recorded on Thursday a total of 27,232,095 enrollees for basic education in school year 2021-2022, an increase of almost 4% from last year’s enrollees.

Based on DepEd’s Learner Information System (LIS), this enrollment is 1,005,073 more pupils or 3.83% higher than the 26,227,022 enrollments last school year, with an increase of 1,187,632 public school enrollees reaching from last year.

There was however a slight decrease in enrollment in private schools, state and local universities and colleges, and Philippine Schools Overseas.

“It validates the trend in our quick-count surpassing the enrollment last school year. This confirms our earlier statement that our learners last year continued their participation in formal school this year, and that a considerable number of those who skipped last school year have returned to school,” DepEd said in a statement.

DepEd also saw a reversal in the trend on transferees this year after 612,140 learners transferred from public to private schools, while only 305,513 transferred from private to public schools. Last year, the migration from the private to public schools was greater.

While there was an increase in the formal basic education enrollees, the informal education or the Alternative Learning System (ALS) enrollees had a sharp decrease of 60%.

The ALS enrollment is at 239,616, which is 359,749 lower than the 599,365 ALS enrollment last year. DepEd said they are doubling their efforts to still improve this number.

DepEd however noted that this data is not yet final as there are still 520 schools that are yet to update their enrollment profile in the LIS until the end of November where some one million more students are expected to enroll.

“For this reason, we have kept the system open to allow these schools to update their enrollment profile in the LIS up to end-November 2021. We have notified the Division Superintendents where the non-participating schools are located to find out the reasons why these schools have not updated their enrollment profile, and to provide assistance in completing the LIS updating if necessary,” DepEd said in a statement. — Giselle Ombay/BM, GMA News
