Palace mourns death of CHR chairperson Gascon
Malacañang on Monday extended condolences to the family and friends of the late Commission on Human Rights Chairperson Chito Gascon who died of COVID-19 complications on Saturday.
"Nakikiramay rin kami sa pagyao ni CHR Chairman Jose Luis Martin 'Chito' Gascon (We are conveying our condolences [to the family and friends] on the death of CHR chairman Jose Luis Martin 'Chito' Gascon)," presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said.
"We offer our prayers as tributes pour in to honor the life and service of Chairman Gascon. May he rest in peace," he added.
President Rodrigo Duterte and Gascon have been at odds over human rights issues.
Gascon's brother Miguel confirmed the news of the CHR chairman's passing on Saturday due to COVID-19.
Politicians, lawmakers, and top government officials mourned his death.
The CHR vowed to continue the human rights work of Gascon, "with equal fervor and sincerity that Chair Chito exemplified in his work,” commission spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia said in a statement.
Gascon's ashes were brought to the CHR over the weekend. Masses and services would be held for Gascon at the CHR in the next several days, the commission said. —KG, GMA News
