Former Speaker Alvarez seeks reelection as Davao del Norte representative

Former Speaker and incumbent Davao Del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez filed his certificate of candidacy for reelection on Monday, his office confirmed.

Alvarez, a former ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, now chairs the political party Reporma where former Defense Secretary Renato de Villa was one of the stalwarts.

Alvarez served as House Speaker from July 2016 until he was ousted by majority of his colleagues in July 2018 wherein then Pampanga Representative and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was elected as Speaker.

After quitting the ruling party PDP-Laban in November 2020, Alvarez criticized the Duterte administration over its drug war and COVID-19 response. —KG, GMA News
