Neri Colmenares to run for senator in Eleksyon 2022

Former Bayan Muna party-list Representative Neri Colmenares will seek a Senate seat in the 2022 elections.

Colmenares, a human rights lawyer and current chairman of Bayan Muna, said his candidacy is endorsed by the Makabayan Coalition.

"The officers and leaders of Makabayan have decided that I should run, and I will run," he said in an interview on ANC on Thursday.

"I will run for the Senate seat in 2022 if only to deliver the sharpest message to the candidate of President [Rodrigo] Duterte."

A critic of the Duterte administration, Colmenares is also among several lawyers and law students behind the Manlaban sa EJK advocacy group. He also represents families of victims of extrajudicial killing in a complaint before the International Criminal Court.

Colmenares joined the Senate race in the 2019 elections but was unsuccessful.

Also chairman of the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers, Colmenares is among the supporters of opposition coalition 1Sambayan. --KBK, GMA News
