NBI files criminal charges over PNP-PDEA shootout

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday filed criminal charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with the deadly shootout between policemen and anti-narcotics operatives in Quezon City last February.

The charges filed against 12 Quezon City cops and four PDEA personnel include homicide, attempted homicide, direct assault, falsification of official documents, robbery, and conniving with or consenting to evasion.

These individuals were named respondents to the following complaints:

Homicide (for the death of Police Corporal Eric Elvin Garado)

Homicide (for the death of Police Corporal Lauro de Guzman)

Homicide (for the death of informant Untong Matalnas)

• unidentified assailant

Attempted homicide (for the gunshot wounds sustained by Police Lieutenant Ronnie Ereño)

Attempted homicide (for the gunshot wounds sustained by PDEA agent Baguidudol and PDEA agent Martin Matthew Soriano)

On February 24, elements of the PNP and PDEA engaged in a shootout in front of a fast food chain along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, killing four people. Both agencies said they were conducting anti-drug operations at the time.

President Rodrigo Duterte then designated the NBI as the sole body to investigate the shootout. Lawmakers had also conducted hearings aimed at shedding light on the incident. — BM, GMA News
