5,484 new COVID-19 infections lead to 49K active cases

The Philippines’ tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases rose to 1,455,585 on Thursday after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 5,484 new infections.

Due to this, the number of active cases in the country increased to 49,036.

Of this, 90.9% are mild, 3.7% are asymptomatic, 2.2% are severe, and 1.5% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,380,899 after 3,925 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 25,650 with 191 new ones, the highest daily fatalities recorded since June 11.

Nine duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 152 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 57% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 36% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region, 43% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 31% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

Vaccine czar secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. earlier said the national government can administer 70 million first doses of COVID-19 vaccines by November.

The Philippines has given 12 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines so far.—LDF, GMA News
