DepEd finds 155 errors in learning materials, including use of vulgar word

Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio on Monday said the agency has discovered a total of 155 errors in their learning materials.

Initially, there were 163 reported errors in learning materials from October 2020 to June 2021, but upon validation, the number went down to 155, San Antonio told a hearing at the House of Representatives.

San Antonio said 100 of these errors were in locally-developed materials. He said they refer to the division office level for the issuance of errata on these errors.

According to San Antonio, the DepEd has also released notes to teachers to address these mistakes. He also said more than 20 of these errors came from unknown sources.

"Hindi po 'yan ma-locate, wala pong nakapagpapakita sa amin na nasa DepEd 'yan o ginawa 'yan ng DepEd," San Antonio told the House Committee on Public Accounts.

Vulgar word

Meanwhile, a resource person bared that a vulgar word has found its way into one of the learning materials of the DepEd amid the distance learning scheme.

Antonio Calipjo-Go showed to lawmakers what was indicated in a module for students in Pampanga. The module defines "aswang" as:

"Siya rin ay isang dies pero ang Aswang ay pinaniniwalaan na ito'y tao na kumakain ng kapwa tao, kung minsan ang mga ito ay pinapaniwalaan na may mga pakpak at sila raw ay gising kung gabi para maghanap ng makakantot or maaswang."

Calipjo-Go had earlier flagged the errors in the learning modules of DepEd.

San Antonio said the inclusion of the word "k*ntot," which means sexual intercourse in English, is unacceptable. He also said the module had been recalled in February.

AAMBIS-OWA party-list Representative Sharon Garin said these errors were disappointing given that 155 was a substantial number.

"One topic I'm particular about is 'yung unknown sources. How did it happen? 'Di ba nakakatakot 'yan, nakakalusot 'yan and hindi niyo alam saan nanggaling," Garin said.
