Ex-SC Justice Arturo Brion appointed Philippine Judicial Academy chief

Retired Supreme Court (SC) Justice Arturo Brion has been appointed as chancellor of the Philippine Judicial Academy (PHILJA), the training school for magistrates, judges, court personnel, lawyers and aspirants to judicial posts.

The SC tapped Brion to replace Adolfo Azcuna whose term will end on May 31, according to the high court. Brion is expected to serve as chancellor for two years without prejudice to subsequent reappointment.

Brion was SC justice for more than eight years or from March 2008 to December 2016. He is also a former Court of Appeals justice and Labor secretary during the Arroyo administration.

Brion earned his law degree from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1974, graduating cum laude and class valedictorian. He topped the Bar examinations in the same year.

The PHILJA was institutionalized through a law passed by Congress in 1998. —Virgil Lopez/KG, GMA News
